Painting people I know and love
Before attempting to beautify unadulterated male form I set out to find the in between. I could not tell you how the idea came to mind but I knew I HAD to paint a mermaid roller skating, and that idea had queer written all over it from the very start. What a perfect setting to work on integrating both masculine and feminine energy. Nonbinary Darla volunteered, and our photoshoot for reference shots was pure entertainment. No need to finagle a shot that looked like a handstand- Darla posed for at least 10 different stands no problem, and we captured exactly the queer whimsy I had hoped for. My sister had also volunteered and while it was a cool moment to find out her sense of gender sometimes changes day to day, her look was not quite the in between at this point in time that I was looking for. A piece of my sister Claire was incorporated in this painting though-an acrylic pour she had trashed gave me what i needed to make the “marble” countertop our pitcher of Theymaid sits on. They made this. We made this.
